Kishiwada Danjiri Festival 2009
[info]road_rage_bunny
saw a really cool festival in Kishiwada Yesterday. The closest thing i can discribe it as it like running with the bulls but with giant shrines pulled by hundreds of people through the narrow streets of an otherwise sleepy town called Kishiwada.

While wondering around (Miho and I)and avoiding being hit by passing shrines we came across one home base to one of the shrines and this old man trying to chat us up in his best broken english, adding "Happy" to everything. he was awesome forcing food and expensive sake upon us. When their shrine pulled in it was like instant party. it takes 600 people about to put everything together and run the show for one shrine. Yes this shrines cause a lot of property damage but damned if it doesn't bring a community together young and old.

More photos will be up as soon as i can. really busy today getting ready for my Shanghai trip tomorrow.

back in japan and posting again
[info]road_rage_bunny
Long time i know. It's been 2 weeks back in japan. what a weird feeling to come home from home. Or even just as weird getting culture shock in your home country. Landing in canada felt kind of like how a sailor must feel when he sets foot on land after being at sea for months on end. Feels like the ground is moving under you feet and it's hard to catch your balance.

I'm sorry i didn't get to see everyone when i was there. I feel like an asshole and that i'm gona have to make it up to everyone when i come back again. And again will be a lot sooner i think. I have the feeling that i finally need to move back. or at least stop teaching English. I love japan but the only future i can possible see in japan is if i open up my own language school. And canada offers well i can get paid for photography in canada. sooner or later.

that and speaking in English with out having to hold back felt kind of nice as well. There's a lot of things i still have to work out. I find the more adult you become the more adult problems you have to deal with. who'd have thunk?

Anyways while in canada I ended up shooting my friend Jen. She was one of my first models when i picked up my Nikon D70 and with the very same camera we tried shooting again in downtown. I'd like to think that these ones are better then the ones i did 5 years ago. but i'll let you guys be the judge.

anyone remember this song as a child?

Great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
Little dirty birdy feet.
French fried eyeballs
Swimming in a bowl of blood
And I forgot my spoon!

(different voice--"but I brought my straw")

Just thinking of songs to teach my kids

BIO,
[info]road_rage_bunny
I don't know, I haven't had to really Write anything in english in a very long time. what do you think?

Paul Hillier is a photographer, designer, illustrator, teacher, Takoyaki lover and all around nice guy. After Graduating from Sheridan College in 2000 he worked As a corporate designer and freelance illustrator for a few years before luck picked up his life and dropped it in the middle of Japan where they actually let him teach Kindergarten kids Emgrish English. When not photographing everything under the visible electromagnetic spectrum he can be found embarrassing himself and the Japanese language at his local Izakaya.

This is for the Toronto R rated Gallery happening in Sept.

Evangelion 2.0
[info]road_rage_bunny
been seeing a few movies lately. saw Transformers last week and that was.. well you guys have all seen it by now so i'll let that one slide.

However Tonight i saw the new Evangelion flick and WOW. SOOOOO PRETTY!!! For those of you who don't' know Evangelion is an animated series from japan that pretty much defined the Anime Boom in the 90's up until now 26 episode tv series followed up by a movie. it was violent, Epic and Emotional, and just about completely incomprehensible. I loved it. I remember lending the whole seires to Eric back in college just to have him call me up at 7 in the morning shouting in the phone "WHAT DOES IT MEAN!! WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN!!?"

Anyways fast forward to now. Evangelion is a cash cow that makes money on anything it's stamped on and the orginal director now has the time and money to pull a Gorge Lucus and remake the whole series in his "true" vision and at first i was like, Yeah okay what ever. But as it turns out this was really a good idea.

The first of 4 movies came out 2 years ago and it was awesome! its like all the best parts of what you remember and turning the volume to 11 while taking crack, cocaine and speed all at the same time! Add in a little bit of acid for a few WTF moments and that's pretty much evangelion 2.0

PS: for those of you who want to wait until a subtitled version comes out. I understoon maybe about 30$ of what they said in the movie including the horrible attempt at english. My friend saw it with me and he understands NO Japanese at all. By the end of the movie we both understood exactly the same thing.

PPS: this one really starts to deviate from the original.
